 MECHANICAL EDITING

A mechanical edit is best suited for manuscripts that have been finalized in terms of content. Now that you’re through revising, you’ll want to benefit from the keen, detail-oriented eye of a copy editor to ensure that readers are impressed by your professionalism—a properly edited manuscript will help your novel stand out in a saturated market.

It’s time to tackle the nitty-gritty—that’s right, we’re talking grammar, punctuation, syntax, and all of those other word- and sentence-level mechanics that love to give our writer brains a headache.

In order to tailor our services best to your manuscript’s specific needs, we offer two tiers of mechanical editing:

 COPY EDITING

A copy edit will best benefit manuscripts in need of an extra bit of polish, including refinement of stylistic elements such as phrasing, word choice, and clarity. While this is a very hands-on type of edit, the editor will prioritize maintaining the author’s narrative voice. A copy edit consists of two full read-throughs of your manuscript, during which the editor will:

Service 3-03.png
  • Correct all issues in grammar, punctuation, and usage

  • Ensure consistency in style and usage (adherence to the Chicago Manual of Style; adherence to the Oxford Canadian Dictionary for Canadian English and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary for American English) as well as in character and place names

  • Highlight any blatant factual errors, potential copyright infringements, or potential issues in legality

  • Eliminate any redundancies and resolve any ambiguities in phrasing

  • Rework any awkward constructions to ensure prose is clear, concise, and idiomatic

RATE: $30/hour (roughly $0.012-$0.024/word)

 PROOFREADING

Our proofreading service is designed for manuscripts that already have one foot out the door. It’s your last line of defence against sneaky homonyms, tense errors, and other finicky details. A proofread consists of one complete read-through of your manuscript, during which the editor will:

  • Correct typographical errors and egregious grammar, punctuation, and usage errors

  • Catch any last-minute errors that have been overlooked or introduced during revisions

  • Ensure consistent spelling of names and terminology

 CONTENT EDITING

Content editing deals with the big-picture elements of your story. You’ve finished writing your draft—now it’s time to dive into the revision trenches. You’ll want to make sure that the storytelling elements and techniques you’ve implemented throughout the manuscript are functioning properly, and the best way to do so is to receive in-depth feedback from a trained editor or beta reader.

In order to tailor our services best to your manuscript’s specific needs, we offer two tiers of content editing:

STRUCTURAL EDITING

If you’re ready to take a deep dive into the blood and guts of your story and refine the content of your manuscript, it’s time for a structural edit. Our editors are trained not only to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of your novel in its current form, but also to envision and guide you toward the best possible version of your novel.

When you purchase a structural edit, you’ll receive:

  • A full read-through of your manuscript

  • An annotated manuscript with comments highlighting specific examples of elements that are either effective or in need of improvement

  • An editorial letter addressing all structural concerns and offering possible solutions to those concerns

A structural editor will look for:

  • Missing or underdeveloped character arcs

  • Unnecessary or unbalanced POVs

  • Unresolved plot elements and narrative inconsistencies

  • Issues with pacing

  • Issues with overarching story structure

RATE: $30/hour (roughly $0.01/word)

BETA READING

Beta reading is a service aimed toward authors who want to gauge how a typical reader might respond to their novel. A beta read will give you a good idea of whether or not your words are having the intended effect on the reader. Rather than diagnose problem areas or suggest alterations to the content, a beta reader will provide you with their honest interpretation of and reaction to the manuscript.

When you purchase a beta read, you will receive:

  • A full read-through of your manuscript

  • An annotated manuscript with in-the-moment thoughts and reactions from the perspective of a reader

  • A completed “Beta Reader Interview” sheet detailing elements of the novel that worked and elements in need of improvement

A beta reader will look for:

  • Favourite and least favourite characters

  • Effectiveness of narrative hooks

  • Unengaging or “skimmable” scenes/chapters

  • Convoluted or confusing plot elements

  • Emotional investment in the characters
